Ratio are a small company based in Portland, Oregon, who wanted to make the best home filter coffee brewing machine they could. We’ve been using this Ratio Six for a month or so, and it’s brilliant. Made of high-quality materials, well-designed, and most importantly, simple to use, it brews awesome coffee and does so consistently well.
It feels as good as it looks: no cheap plastics here, but high-grade stainless steel construction throughout. No, it’s not cheap, but we think it represents good value compared to many filter coffee brewers on the market, not least because Ratio give a 5 year warranty.
They’ve concentrated on the bits that really matter; a stainless steel brewing shower head, aluminium heating element, a brewing cycle that includes a ‘bloom’ or pre-infusion phase, and unlike some home filter machines, you can brew a good amount of coffee – 1.1 litres. The cleaning is simple, the thermal carafe keeps coffee hot for several hours, the footprint is small and it’s quick to heat up and use.
It uses Melitta/Filtropa style filter papers which are available here. You can hack it to use a V60 02 on top of the thermal carafe, but the brewing is so good we preferred to use the Ratio filter basket.
