Kenya

Gitura, Muranga county

Gitura is a small village nestled on the slopes of Mount Kinangop, halfway between Nairobi and Mount Kenya, in the coffee and tea producing county of Muranga. Kenyan coffee production has traditionally been dominated by co-operatives, and the Iyego is a larger co-op, with around 8,000 members, though 1,150 smallholding farmers supply the Gitura mill.

This peaberry lot (only a single seed forms inside the coffee cherry instead of the usual two) is bursting with fruit flavour and bright acidity, and is perfect for filter and pour-over brew methods, though it’s flexible enough to be brewed as an espresso or mokapot if you so wish.

We get an avalanche of raspberry and blackcurrant flavours, wrapped in bright zingy acidity, but then a good amount of cocoa and sweet toffee flavours. Happy brewing!
