Rwanda has a reputation for producing amazing coffee and this coffee is another great example. From the Gitwe mill, this is a lovely example of a fully washed Red Bourbon.

THIS IS PERFECT FOR:

Any time, it's a real all-rounder!

Rwanda, Gitwe lot 054, fully washed process

Rwanda has a reputation for producing amazing coffee and this year’s is no exception. It won’t be around for very long as it’s already anchored our Christmas blend, and we only have a limited amount remaining.

The shores of Lake Kivu have everything required to grow amazing coffee – volcanic soils, plentiful rainfall, high altitudes, and varietals like this Red Bourbon which result in fruit-filled, rounded, sweet coffees like this.

Gitwe is a relatively new mill in Nyamasheke district, which stretches from the shores of Lake Kivu to the borders of Nyungwe Forest Park. It is supplied by 800 smallholders, and run by Rwanda Trading Company, one of the exporters with impeccable quality standards. If you drank our Gishawama Island coffee last year, then this come from the south of this, and near to many other mills, including some we’ve sourced from before.

These farmers will have a few hundred trees each, maybe less, and so they deliver their ripe cherry to the Gitwe mill, where it’s processed in lots, with this lot being number 054. It’s de-pulped almost immediately, then fermented for 8-12 hours, rinsed, and then sun-dried on raised beds for 10-15 days.

This is bursting with orange fruitiness, and we taste a load of red cherry and cranberry too, mixed in with a little mulled spice and a caramel sweetness – all classic red bourbon flavours. In espresso and mokapot this will be bright, but not overpowering, but filter and Aeropress is where it will really shine. Delicious however you decide to brew, baby!
