THIS IS PERFECT FOR:
Afternoons or time to savour, special occasions
Kenya, Maganjo mill, Rumukia co-op, Nyeri
This is the second Kenyan we’ve released this year, and it’s already a massive favourite with the roastery team. We’d go as far as saying it’s one of our favourite coffees of the year.
Nyeri is one of the great coffee-growing provinces of Kenya, stretching from the slopes of Mount Kenya to the Aberdare mountains. Both Ed & Chris have visited a few times, and the region is home of some of the finest tasting coffees on the planet.
The Rumukia co-operative is comprised of several thousand smallholder farmers, who sell their coffee cherries to one of the eight wet mills that the co-operative owns and operates, one of which is Maganjo. Where the co-op has a significant advantage, is that it owns its own dry mill, quality control lab and sample roaster, which means stand-out lots like this one can be separated from the more mainstream qualities by their experienced team. The coffee then enters the internal auction system, where it can attract much higher prices for the farmers and the co-op. This is the most expensive coffee we’ve sourced to date (hence why it’s at the top end of the price scale) but we think it’s worth every penny.
Expect a big aroma of passion fruit juice, followed by wave after wave of blackcurrant, with the lively acidity balanced out by the juicy sweetness. Throw in some zesty orange marmalade flavours too, and complexity grows and grows. This is special coffee, and it’ll be best drunk as a filter or V60. Enjoy!
