Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Konga natural process
The town of Yirgacheffe in Southern Ethiopia is one of the best places in the world to source elegant, crisp, fully washed coffees. This isn’t one of those coffees. Inspired by the famous Underworld track of a similar name, this coffee is a full on assault on the senses, packing boozy red fruit, punchy body, masses of white chocolate and a complex finish with hints of liquorice.
The Konga mill, just outside the town of Yirgacheffe, is supplied by approximately 600 small-holder growers who grow coffee in their back gardens. What gives this coffee its punch is an altitude of 1950-2100 metres above sea level, and a climate and typography that is perfectly suited to growing coffee. Mix in some great cherry selection at the mill, slow and even drying on African raised beds, and a roast that steadily dials up the tempo, and you get a coffee that guarantees to turn heads and get tongues dancing.
We missed this coffee last year, as some logistical problems stopped it getting to you. This seasons’ arrival is quite late, but it’s worth the wait. Expect a mass of strawberry and red berry flavours, especially in filter and espresso brewing methods. There is plenty of sweetness too, with the white chocolate making an appearance (you’ll notice it more in cafetière brews), and a lovely complexity at the finish. In espresso it’ll be bright and fruity, in filter it’ll be really moreish. We’re delighted it’s back!
