How to make a caramel iced coffee

Combining the sweetness of caramel and the rich flavours of coffee with the creaminess of milk, caramel iced coffee is a refreshing sweet treat on a hot day. It’s easy to make yourself and will elevate your coffee from a simple drink with deliciously complex flavours to a fun refreshment that doubles as a sweet treat.

You’ll need:

Espresso machine or coffee brewer

Freshly roasted coffee (beans or ground)

Ice

Cup

Caramel syrup, salted caramel syrup or caramel sauce

Serving glass

Whipped cream (to taste)

Our caramel iced coffee recipe

Our favourite type of caramel iced coffee is a caramel iced latte. Start by adding 2 tablespoons (around 30ml) of caramel syrup or sauce to your serving glass with 175ml of milk (or plant-based alternative) and fill it with ice.

Next, make a double shot espresso, or short strong coffee, using your preferred brewing method. You can use an espresso machine, moka pot, cafetiere, pour over or AeroPress to make a short strong coffee.

Once your coffee has brewed, add it to the glass and give it a good stir.

If you’re feeling extra indulgent, you can top your caramel iced coffee with whipped cream and caramel sauce. Add a straw and enjoy this delicious drink at home!

How many calories are in caramel iced coffee?

The number of calories in your iced caramel coffee will depend on a few things. This includes the syrup or sauce you use, your choice of milk and how much you add and whether or not you add whipped cream or extra caramel sauce.

A simple iced Americano contains around 15 calories before you add any milk or syrup to the coffee. But, it starts getting more complicated when we add delicious extras. The following calories are an estimation, based on using 175ml of milk, 2 tablespoons of syrup, 2 tablespoons of sauce and 1 serving of whipped cream.

Skimmed milk – 61.25kcal

Semi-skimmed milk – 87.5kcal

Whole milk – 113.75kcal

Soy milk – 101.5kcal

Oat milk – 70kcal

Coconut milk – 35kcal

Caramel syrup – 80kcal

Sugar-free caramel syrup – 0kcal

Caramel sauce – 110kcal

Whipped cream – 80kcal

Vegan whipped cream – 61kcal

With this in mind, a standard iced caramel latte using 175ml of semi-skimmed milk, 2 tablespoons of caramel syrup and coffee would be around 182.5 calories in total.

Is there a vegan version?

It’s easy to make your iced caramel coffee vegan. First of all, you might think that if you don’t add milk to your iced caramel coffee, it would be automatically vegan. This might be the case but it does depend on what caramel syrup you use. Because caramel is typically made using sugar, water and butter it is not generally vegan, so make sure you buy a vegan caramel syrup before you get started.

If you choose to add milk to your caramel iced coffee, this is a very easy swap to make your caramel iced coffee vegan. Simply choose your favourite plant-based milk and

What is the best brewing method?

Some people might say using an espresso machine is the best way to brew the coffee needed for a caramel iced coffee. And, while this will make a banging brew, we think you should use the brewing method you like best. That way, you’re familiar with how you like to brew your coffee and you’re more likely to enjoy the flavours you know and love.

What is the best coffee bean to use?

Again, the best coffee beans to use for your iced caramel coffee will likely depend on the flavours you like best from your coffee. However, if you really want to enhance the caramel notes, you can start by using coffee beans with notes of caramel. Our house blend, Espresso Yourself, has notes of caramel, dark chocolate and a toffee sweetness and is an award-winning blend of two awesome coffees. You’ll also typically find that coffee beans from Central and South America have sweet caramel notes.

How to keep your caramel iced coffee cool

One of our favourite summer hacks to keep your iced coffee cool, without diluting the coffee flavour, is coffee ice cubes. Brew an Americano the day before and pour the coffee into an ice tray. Pop it in the freezer overnight and you’ll wake up to iced coffee cubes to keep your caramel iced coffee cool and caffeinated.

Caramel iced coffee can add a hint of sweetness to your cool, caffeinated beverage. It’s easy to make, change and customise to suit your taste and can be easily made vegan too. Not a fan of the sweetness? Check out our step-by-step guide to making an iced Americano, or buy your beans now if you’re ready to get started.
