Tanzania Lunji Estate, Mbeya, fully washed
The Lunji Estate was established in 1898 in Mbarali, at the foot of Mbeya Peak, but coffee wasn’t planted here until 1928. The current owners, the Maier family, took over in 1994, and operate under a community-orientated vision. They are still actively involved in the day-to-day running of the farm, along with their 26-strong team (which swells to 150 at peak harvest time). The farm is 275 hectares, but coffee is only grown on about 92 hectares, with the remainder given over to natural forest, which feeds the water reservoirs, fosters biodiversity and supports natural soil
This coffee is a great example of a Tanzania fully washed coffee, with juicy fruit, some acidity, but balanced with plenty of sweetness. It’s a real all-rounder, so it can work in a variety of brewing methods.
We taste plenty of pink rhubarb, along with some orange acidity, then plenty of apple and some peach, mixed in with some honeycomb sweetness.
