Finca Villaure – Grind Control 2017
Grind Control to Major Tom is one of our best-loved and most popular coffees, and we’re delighted to release this years coffee, from the La Loma lot of Finca Villaure in Hoja Blanca, Huehuetenango. Finca Villaure is an amazing farm, owned and run by the Villatoro family, who have been farming coffee in Guatemala since 1956, and they purchased Villaure in 1986. Around 40 members of the extended family live and work between Villaure and the sister farm, La Esperanza, in an extended family village built around the wet mill that is shared between the two farms.
The Villatoro family are multiple award-winners – Don Eleodoro, the family head, founded La Esperanza on the principles of hard work, family commitment, and deidication to quality, and that approach has been lived out since. Villaure is run by his son, Aurelio, one of the nicest people in coffee, and thanks to the joy of social media, you can follow their news and developments by following them on Instagram here.
This is the second year of buying Villaure La Loma, although last year it didn’t appear under the Neighbourhood label. Those of you who have a keen eye for detail will remember that we were sourcing Guatemala for Grind Control from Finca San Antonio in San Martin de Jilotepeque – unfortunately, we weren’t able to access any of Sergio’s coffee this year, so we consolidated our Guatemala purchasing and were able to secure enough coffee for our needs from Villaure thanks to the help of our friends at Third Wave Coffee trading.
This year’s offering oozes with sweet toffee, milk chocolate and plum notes, with a real biscuity sweetness. The La Loma hillside is planted with Bourbon, and the fully washed processing happens at the family wet mill, on site. This kind of attention to detail results in beautiful quality coffee, which is a pleasure toand share with you. It’ll work in every brewing method – it makes stunning espresso, works brilliantly in filter, cafetière, aeropress and stovetop brews too. We’ve been drinking it non-stop since it arrived, and we love it more every time we do.
This is the second year of a developing relationship – we aim to be working alongside Aurelio and the Villatoro family for years to come, and we will be visiting as soon as we can. You can find it on the webshop here.
